Kaduna Government Establishes Taskforce to Curb Diversion of Nutrition Commodities

The Kaduna State Government has taken a decisive step to address concerns over the misdirection of essential nutrition supplies by inaugurating a 17-member taskforce. This initiative is designed to strengthen accountability and ensure that life-saving commodities reach the most vulnerable populations, particularly women and children in dire need across the state.

Addressing Gaps in Transparency and Monitoring

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony on Wednesday, Commissioner for the Planning and Budget Commission (PBC), Mukhtar Ahmed Monrovia, highlighted that the move was prompted by growing reports that nutrition commodities were not reaching their intended beneficiaries. He explained that despite significant investments from both the government and development partners, the expected impact of these interventions has been compromised by deficiencies in transparency and monitoring systems.

Monrovia emphasized that the effectiveness of such humanitarian efforts largely hinges on robust accountability, proper resource utilization, and efficient tracking mechanisms. He noted that field observations have revealed that some commodities fail to reach the "last mile," a situation he described as unacceptable and detrimental to public health outcomes.

Mandate and Composition of the Taskforce

The newly inaugurated taskforce has been assigned a clear mandate to:

  • Strengthen tracking systems for nutrition commodities.
  • Ensure timely and accurate reporting on distribution activities.
  • Monitor distribution channels across Kaduna State to prevent diversion.

Commissioner Monrovia added that committee members were meticulously selected based on their competence and integrity. He urged them to discharge their duties with diligence, stressing that this assignment is critical for improving service delivery, restoring public trust, and achieving better nutrition outcomes in the state.

Response to Persistent Complaints

Chairman of the Committee and Permanent Secretary in the PBC, Mukhtar Abdullahi, stated that the taskforce was established in response to ongoing complaints about the diversion of aid and nutrition commodities. He affirmed that the committee will focus on monitoring, tracking, and ensuring the proper utilization of supplies intended for children and women, who are identified as the most vulnerable groups.

Support from Development Partners

Nutrition Specialist with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Chinwe Ezeife, commended the Kaduna State Government for taking proactive measures to tackle this challenge. She assured continued technical support to enhance accountability and facilitate effective implementation of the taskforce's objectives, underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts in safeguarding nutrition programs.
