The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has expressed shock and sadness over President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's dismissive remarks about the opposition, accusing his administration of presiding over one of the most painful periods in Nigeria's democratic history. The party stated that it is both ironic and tragic that a government under which nearly 35 million Nigerians are projected to face acute food insecurity in 2026 would claim the opposition lacks vision.
Economic Hardship Under Tinubu
In a statement on Monday, the ADC lamented that under President Tinubu's administration, inflation has devastated household incomes, food prices have become unbearable, and insecurity continues to spread. Millions of families have been forced to reduce meals, businesses are shutting down daily, and farmers cannot safely access their farmlands due to banditry and kidnappings.
Food Insecurity Crisis
The party highlighted that international organizations have warned of one of the world's worst food insecurity crises, with about 34.7 million Nigerians facing severe food and nutrition insecurity during the 2026 lean season. Over 2.3 million Nigerians remain displaced by violence, with little assurance of safety from the government.
Opposition's Role
The ADC stated that the opposition has shown more seriousness about governance than many members of Tinubu's administration. It noted that the opposition did not create the hunger, destroy the naira's value, or cause the insecurity affecting farming communities. Nigerians understand who is responsible for their hardship, and no political subterfuge can erase daily suffering.
Call for Accountability
The ADC urged President Tinubu to understand that Nigerians want answers to simple questions: Why is food unaffordable? Why are businesses collapsing? Why are citizens unsafe? The party believes the opposition will move Nigeria forward because the country cannot continue on a path of economic pain, worsening insecurity, and hopelessness.
Presidential Primary Controversy
The ADC also criticized the APC presidential primary, where Tinubu secured 10.99 million votes, calling it a process designed for him to contest against himself. The party described the figure as laughable but recognizable for what it represents.
