Amnesty International has called on the Federal Government to put an end to the killings and terrorist attacks occurring across various parts of Nigeria. The human rights organization made this appeal on Friday through a statement posted on its official X account, strongly condemning the recent killing of 12 individuals in a horrific midnight attack on Ngbra-Zongo village in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Details of the Attack
According to the statement, ten people are currently receiving medical treatment for gunshot wounds sustained during the attack. The victims include pregnant women and children. The assailants locked entire families inside their homes and slaughtered them one by one.
Government Failure
Amnesty International criticized the administration of President Bola Tinubu, stating that the utter failure to address widespread insecurity is costing lives. While the government claims to be tackling the endemic security crisis, the rising death toll tells a different story.
The organization lamented that Plateau State is becoming increasingly unsafe, with attacks on both rural and urban communities forcing residents to live in constant fear of the next assault. Many communities now have mass graves filled with victims of gunmen on rampages.
Amnesty further stated that Nigerian authorities have repeatedly failed the people of Plateau State. Frequent attacks by gunmen have deprived thousands of their rights to life, physical integrity, liberty, freedom of movement, and access to livelihoods.
The statement urged President Bola Tinubu's government to do more to end these attacks and ensure that suspected perpetrators are brought to justice. It also called for adequate reparation to be provided to victims and survivors.
