The political atmosphere in Oyo State has intensified as the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has issued a stern warning to release new allegations of financial mismanagement against the incumbent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) government led by Governor Seyi Makinde.
APC Accuses Makinde of Living in a Glass House
This development, which occurred on Sunday, 4th January 2026, follows recent revelations by former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, concerning a N50 billion sum allegedly released to Governor Makinde by the Federal Government. In a statement released in Ibadan by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, the APC expressed strong disapproval of the governor's handling of the situation.
The party accused Governor Makinde of residing in a "glass house" from where he "throws stones at the neighbourhood" while simultaneously attempting to demonize the federal government. The APC statement criticized the governor's "penchant for self-aggrandisement and dirty politicking."
The N50 Billion Ibadan Explosion Relief Fund Saga
The core of the controversy revolves around the N50 billion Ibadan Explosion Relief Fund. The APC asserted that this issue has removed any doubt that the current PDP administration in Oyo is a "cesspool of corruption" that thrives on false narratives and propaganda.
They labeled the matter an obvious case of fund mismanagement and insensitivity towards the victims of the explosion and their affected community. Furthermore, the party condemned Governor Makinde's attempt to criticize the Tinubu administration instead of appreciating President Bola Tinubu for providing substantial financial support to alleviate the victims' suffering.
Historical Grievances and Current Tensions
The APC's statement also revisited past conflicts, recalling an incident in 2020 when Governor Makinde publicly called out former President Muhammadu Buhari over a consignment of COVID-19 palliative rice that he claimed was contaminated.
In the current political dispensation, the APC accused Governor Makinde of consistently failing to acknowledge the efforts and support from the federal government. They listed several contributions they claim have been ignored:
- Substantial increases in monthly statutory allocations to the state and its 33 local government councils.
- Donations of CNG buses, cars, and tricycles to the state.
- Periodic provision of various financial support packages for residents.
The party noted that the governor's most notable responses have been his open condemnation of the fuel subsidy removal and his opposition to the implementation of the Supreme Court judgment granting full financial autonomy to local government councils.
The Oyo State government has previously responded to the initial allegations through official statements and media interviews, though many analysts have criticized the governor for not disclosing the details of the federal intervention sooner. With the APC's threat of fresh graft allegations, the political dispute in Oyo is poised to escalate further in the coming days.
