Atiku Abubakar, the former vice president of Nigeria, has called for clarification from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) regarding allegations of a voter database breach. The former vice president expressed concern over reports suggesting that sensitive voter information may have been exposed, warning that such incidents could damage public confidence in the electoral process.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, June 2, by Phrank Shaibu, his senior special assistant on public communication, Atiku specifically asked the electoral body to explain how the alleged breach occurred and what measures are being implemented to prevent future occurrences. The statement was sent to Legit.ng.
Atiku Questions INEC on Data Security
Atiku emphasized the importance of safeguarding voter data to maintain the integrity of elections. He noted that any compromise of voter information could lead to manipulation and undermine the credibility of electoral outcomes. The former vice president urged INEC to be transparent in its investigation and to reassure the public that adequate security measures are in place.
The call for answers comes amid growing concerns over cybersecurity threats to Nigeria's electoral system. Atiku's demand highlights the need for robust data protection protocols to ensure free and fair elections.
