Court Orders N5m Damages for Breach of Promise to Marry

A Nigerian lawyer, Arinzechukwu Stephen Chude, has announced that a court ordered his client's former fiancée to pay N5 million in compensation for breach of promise to marry. The lawyer shared the news in a Facebook post on Thursday, May 7, 2026.

Background of the Case

Chude explained that his client, a man, had gone through an introduction and engagement party with the intention of marrying within seven months. Wedding preparations were already underway when the woman sent a text message calling off the wedding. It later emerged that she had reunited with her ex-boyfriend, who had returned from the United Kingdom.

Court Ruling

The court ruled in favor of the client, awarding N5 million in damages. Chude noted that the case relied heavily on witnesses to the introduction and engagement, as well as video and photographic evidence. He also mentioned that he would discuss another judgment on defamation and assault later.
