Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Nigeria have called for the reintegration of terrorists through the military's Operation Safe Corridor (OPSC). In a video circulating on social media, a CSO leader speaking at a press conference argued that terrorists deserve a second chance, noting that they turned to crime due to confusion arising from life circumstances.
Operation Safe Corridor Initiative
Operation Safe Corridor is a federal program launched in 2016 (conceived in 2015) aimed at deradicalizing, rehabilitating, and reintegrating low-risk repentant Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents. Led by the Defence Headquarters and involving over seventeen agencies, the initiative employs non-kinetic methods such as vocational training and psychological support to promote peace in Nigeria's Northeast and Northwest regions.
CSO's Position on Reintegration
The CSO leader stated, "The truth is that the terrorists are one of us before they were confused because of situations and circumstances around us. It is very okay for them to be properly reintegrated into society, but there is need for adequate monitoring of their movements and activities." He emphasized that Nigeria is their only home and they must move forward with their compatriots, with monitoring ensuring they do not deviate after return.
The statement underscores the importance of balancing forgiveness with vigilance to prevent recidivism among former insurgents.
