Human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) has called on the National Judicial Council (NJC) and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to investigate conflicting court rulings that he says could undermine preparations for the 2027 general elections. In a statement titled 'Nigerian Judges and Lawyers Should Be Prevented From Sabotaging the 2027 Election,' Falana expressed concern over recent judgments from the Federal High Court regarding INEC's powers over election timelines.
Conflicting Judgments on INEC Timelines
Falana recalled that on May 26, 2026, Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court invalidated INEC's timeline for party primaries and candidate nominations, nullifying the May 10 deadline for political parties to submit membership registers and databases. The court ruled that INEC's timeframe was inconsistent with the Electoral Act 2026, following a suit by the Youth Party. INEC has appealed and filed for a stay of execution pending the Court of Appeal's decision.
However, Justice James Omotosho of the same court, in a separate suit by the Social Democratic Party (SDP), ruled that INEC has constitutional authority to fix timelines for primaries and electoral activities. Falana argued that these contradictory rulings create uncertainty in the political system and urged the NJC and NBA to urgently investigate the circumstances behind the judgments.
Abdulsalami Calls for Peaceful Politics
Former military head of state General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd) urged politicians to conduct their activities without bitterness as the country prepares for the 2027 elections. After observing Eid-el-Kabir prayers in Minna, Niger State, he emphasized that peaceful and rancour-free political activities are essential for credible elections. He also appealed for continued prayers for peace and security, especially in areas affected by insecurity, noting that divine intervention complements security efforts.
Governor Bago and IPAC Weigh In
Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago urged Muslims to seek forgiveness and pray for a better Nigeria marked by peace and economic prosperity. He expressed optimism that the country would overcome its challenges through love, mutual respect, and collective commitment. Meanwhile, the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) and the Allied People's Movement (APM) demanded credible polls and INEC's neutrality in the 2027 elections. IPAC National Chairman Yusuf Dantalle called on the federal government to intensify the fight against terrorism and urged politicians to shun violence and electoral malpractices to build a decent democratic society that respects the sanctity of the ballot box.
