The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has partnered with the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) in Borno State to combat tax evasion and bullying of revenue staff by individuals and organizations operating in the region.
Sensitization Meeting in Maiduguri
Speaking to journalists after a sensitization session with NRS staff on Thursday in Maiduguri, the Resident Anti-Corruption Commissioner for Borno and Yobe states, Linus Gubbi, explained that the strategic collaboration aims to strengthen the agency's ability to carry out its duties effectively across the state.
Gubbi emphasized that the partnership is crucial for the ICPC's enforcement mandate. He stated, "This collaboration means a lot to us. It will enhance our work because no government agency can operate in isolation. We need to work with other organizations that can provide intelligence-driven insights and information."
He added, "Part of our enforcement role involves summoning defaulting individuals and organizations that refuse to pay taxes. When we receive reports from the NRS, the ICPC will investigate and ensure that defaulters pay outstanding taxes or recover funds meant for government coffers."
Promoting Transparency and Accountability
Gubbi noted that the sensitization effort aligns with the commission's mandate to foster transparency, accountability, and integrity in revenue generation. He said, "Beyond ensuring timely tax payments, it is our duty to educate the public on corrupt practices. That is why we are here at the NRS Borno office to sensitize staff on the need for transparency and integrity in revenue collection."
He stressed that improved revenue collection and management are vital for national development, as tax revenues fund infrastructure and other public projects. The commissioner also highlighted that the initiative supports the Federal Government's tax reform agenda.
"This is part of broader tax reform efforts, as many stakeholders are involved in tax generation and collection. Some individuals may try to cut corners, so we are partnering to ensure proper procedures are followed," Gubbi explained.
NRS Commends ICPC's Initiative
The Tax Controller of the Nigeria Revenue Service in Maiduguri, Adamu Muhammad, praised the ICPC for the timely sensitization. He described it as a wake-up call for staff, noting that while they are aware of the rules governing revenue operations, the visit highlighted important issues and was well received by his team.
Muhammad also addressed the issue of staff bullying during field operations. "We do not face bullying in all cases, but it happens occasionally. I am pleased that the commissioner has acknowledged this concern and promised assistance whenever such incidents occur," he said.
