Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, Nigeria's current National Security Adviser, has navigated an extraordinary professional journey that spans decades of public service. Born on November 21, 1960, in Yola, Adamawa State, Ribadu's path to national prominence began with his admission to Ahmadu Bello University in 1980, where he laid the groundwork for his legal career.
After being called to the bar in 1984 and enrolling as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, Ribadu joined the Nigeria Police Force as an Assistant Superintendent of Police on January 1, 1986. His rise through the ranks saw him occupying the position of Head, Legal and Prosecution Department of the Nigeria Police Force by 2002, demonstrating how he effectively expanded his academic legal training through practical experience in law enforcement.
The EFCC Years: Defining an Anti-Corruption Legacy
The turning point in Ribadu's career came in April 2003 when he assumed office as the inaugural chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. President Olusegun Obasanjo had announced his appointment on November 29, 2002—just eight days after Ribadu turned 42—tasking him with leading the novel anti-graft body to combat official corruption and financial crimes damaging Nigeria's economy.
During his tenure, Ribadu transformed the EFCC into a formidable institution that earned both domestic respect and international recognition. His clinical forensic approach and scrupulous evidence gathering brought convictions against numerous high-profile financial criminals, including politically exposed persons, ministers from lucrative federal ministries, senators, and state governors.
Ribadu's effectiveness was demonstrated by his reappointment for a second term in 2007, but his zealous pursuit of corruption also made him powerful enemies. The most notorious incident involved an alleged $15 million bribe offered by a South South state governor to halt investigations—a case that generated both vilification and veneration for the anti-corruption czar.
His tenure was marked by significant achievements, including recovering substantial amounts of stolen funds and sending numerous corrupt officials to jail. Ribadu revealed that between his birth year and when he assumed office at EFCC, more than $380 billion had been siphoned into private pockets, offshore accounts, and hidden repositories.
Exile, Transformation and Political Evolution
Ribadu's promotion to Assistant Inspector General of Police by the outgoing Obasanjo administration sparked controversy and conspiracy plots against him. His subsequent admission to the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies in Kuru was widely perceived as a politically motivated move to remove him from the EFCC.
Following his controversial exit from both the EFCC and Nigeria Police, Ribadu embarked on a period of self-imposed exile during which he served as a fellow at the Centre for Global Development, a UK-based think tank focused on poverty reduction. This experience allowed him to deepen his understanding of the connection between corruption and mass poverty while equipping him with new perspectives for future challenges.
His political ambitions materialized when he became the Action Congress of Nigeria's presidential candidate for the 2011 general election. Although unsuccessful, this venture provided Ribadu with deeper insights into Nigerian politics and brought him closer to political strategist Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Return to Service as National Security Adviser
When Tinubu assumed the presidency on May 29, 2023, he appointed Ribadu as Nigeria's first civilian National Security Adviser. This historic appointment leveraged Ribadu's extensive experience in law enforcement, anti-corruption, and policy development.
As NSA, Ribadu has already demonstrated his effectiveness through significant security breakthroughs, including the arrest of prominent operatives involved in cryptocurrency exchange manipulations through Binance that threatened Nigeria's security and financial markets.
