The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly refuted assertions made by former Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Turaki, labeling his interpretation of the April 30, 2026 Supreme Court judgment as a deliberate misrepresentation of facts.
During a press conference at the party's national secretariat in Wadata Plaza, Abuja, the PDP clarified that the apex court's ruling solely invalidated the controversial Ibadan Convention and dismissed Turaki's factional appeal for lack of merit. The party emphasized that no decision was made regarding the suspension or expulsion of any party official.
The PDP stated, 'The judgment is clear and unambiguous. It addressed only the validity of the so-called 15th and 16th Ibadan Convention. At no point did the court make any pronouncement on suspension or expulsion of any officer of the party.'
Furthermore, the party insisted there is no leadership vacuum, with structures remaining intact under National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed and National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu. It denounced attempts by the Turaki group to distort the judgment for public sympathy, urging Nigerians to refer to the Certified True Copy of the ruling.
The PDP also criticized former Senate President and ex-BoT Chairman Adolphus Wabara for claiming a BoT takeover of the party. The party argued that the constitution does not empower the BoT to assume NWC functions, and that Wabara's tenure as BoT chairman had expired, with Senator Mao Ohuabunwa being the recognized leader.
The party warned, 'Senator Adolphus Wabara should desist from parading himself as speaking on behalf of the PDP. Such actions amount to infractions that will no longer be tolerated.'
Accusing those behind the Ibadan convention of defying court orders, the PDP asserted that their actions post-judgment reveal an agenda to destabilize the party. It reiterated that there are no factions and urged media to avoid portraying the party as divided. The PDP called on members and the public to disregard propaganda from 'rejected elements,' affirming its unity and focus as Nigeria's leading opposition party.
