U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has expressed concern over the rising violence targeting Christians in Nigeria, while reaffirming ongoing counterterrorism cooperation between the United States and the Nigerian government.
Rubio stated that the U.S. continues to work closely with Nigerian security agencies to combat terrorism and dismantle extremist networks operating within the country. He highlighted a recent joint operation that successfully eliminated the second-in-command of global ISIS operating from inside Nigeria.
Joint Operations and Security Collaboration
“On Nigeria, many are deeply concerned about violence against Christians,” Rubio said. “We are now actively engaged in counterterrorism cooperation with the Nigerian government and Nigerian security forces, including a joint operation a couple of weeks ago that eliminated the number two leader of global ISIS operating from inside the country, and that cooperation continues.”
He noted that the partnership reflects growing security collaboration between both countries as they work to tackle terrorism and strengthen stability in affected regions.
Renewed International Attention
Rubio’s comments come amid renewed international attention on insecurity, insurgency, and attacks on religious communities in parts of Nigeria. The United States remains committed to supporting Nigeria in its efforts to counter extremist threats and protect vulnerable populations.
The cooperation between the two nations underscores a shared commitment to global counterterrorism and regional stability.
