Legal Expert Alleges Political Motives Behind Tinubu's Security Approach
President Bola Tinubu has been accused of avoiding decisive action against terrorism and banditry due to his second-term ambition in the 2027 general election, according to a legal practitioner and political commentator. Binzak Azeez made the allegation in an exclusive interview with Legit.ng, asserting that the administration has failed to provide adequate security for the country.
Analyst Claims Tinubu Has Capacity but Withholds Action
Azeez stated that he believes President Tinubu possesses the capacity and will to fight insecurity but is intentionally stepping back for political reasons. He spoke against the backdrop of recent kidnappings, including the abduction of school children and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. The victims have spent over a month in captivity, and despite the president's vows to rescue them, a nationwide outcry has ensued.
Azeez explained: “The Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led administration has failed woefully in ensuring adequate security in the country. I feel the president has the will and capacity to effectively tackle the rising insecurity, but he is intentionally holding back due to political reasons.”
Sponsors of Insecurity Among Elite, Says Azeez
The legal icon alleged that most sponsors of terrorism, kidnapping, and banditry in Nigeria are among the elite who can influence electoral decision-making. He argued that Tinubu is avoiding stepping on toes in the genuine combat against insecurity. Azeez criticized the president's approach as cosmetic, urging the use of all state security apparatus and strict action against those advocating dialogue with terrorists.
He added: “I am totally convinced that the majority of the sponsors and financiers of terrorism, kidnapping and banditry in Nigeria are amongst the elite who can influence the electoral decision-making of the populace. The president doesn't want to step on toes in the genuine combat against insecurity.”
Nationwide Outcry Over Kidnappings
The abduction in Oyo State has sparked widespread anger, with security operatives assuring the public that the victims will be rescued. However, Azeez noted that a cosmetic approach cannot address rising insecurity. He called on President Tinubu to view state governors, clerics, and others advocating peaceful dialogue with terrorists as threats to national security.
Presidency Responds to Critics
In related news, the presidency responded to Peter Obi's criticism of Tinubu, with Bayo Onanuga, special adviser to the president on information and strategy, dismissing Obi's claims as ignorant. Onanuga stated that Nigeria's electricity problem is not a shortage of gas, defending the administration's focus.
