Venezuela Names Only African Country on Visa-Free List

Venezuela's Ministry of Popular Power for Foreign Relations has published an official list of 71 countries whose nationals can enter the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela for tourism without obtaining a visa in advance. Among these, only one African country appears: South Africa.

South Africa Stands Alone on Venezuela's Visa-Free List

The list includes countries from Europe, Asia, the Caribbean, and Latin America, such as Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Russia, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Turkey, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, and Trinidad and Tobago. South Africa is the sole African entry, leaving the rest of the continent — including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Egypt, and Ethiopia — requiring a tourist visa before travel.

Visa Requirements for African Travellers

Nationals of countries not on the exemption list must gather a range of documents and pay a consular fee to apply for a Venezuelan tourist visa. Required documents include a valid passport with at least six months remaining validity, a residency confirmation, two recent colour passport-sized photographs, a bank letter showing account opening date, number, and balance, an employer letter detailing employment history and salary, property records if applicable, a photocopy of a round-trip or outbound ticket, a medical certificate from a health authority, a hotel reservation or notarised letter of invitation, and proof of consular fee payment.

The extensive documentation places a significant administrative burden on African travellers, contrasting with the visa-free access granted to South African passport holders.
