The Lagos State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has made a bold declaration to wrestle control of the state from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
During a mobilization rally held over the weekend in Oshodi/Isolo, party leaders appealed to what they described as meaningful citizens of Lagos to collaborate with them in what they see as a crucial mission to liberate the state from prolonged mismanagement.
Call for Political Liberation
Rahman Owokoniran, the Lagos apex leader of ADC, addressed a crowd of enthusiastic supporters, emphasizing that the party is fully prepared to reclaim Lagos but stressed that this ambitious goal can only be realized through massive public cooperation.
Owokoniran characterized the event not as a campaign rally but as a call for reflection, recommitment and readiness to stand firmly with the ADC in their quest to transform the political landscape of Nigeria's commercial capital.
The ADC leader launched scathing criticism against the APC, accusing the ruling party of enslaving Lagos since it began governing the state in 1999. He further alleged that the current administration has systematically suppressed opposition parties, creating an uneven political playing field.
Building a Coalition for Change
Owokoniran revealed that the ADC has become the preferred political platform for several prominent democratic actors who he claimed were forced to seek alternative platforms due to the APC's dominance.
He specifically mentioned that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Kaduna State governor Nasir el-Rufai are among those who have aligned with the ADC in what he described as a bid to rescue Nigeria.
The ADC leader highlighted Lagos's strategic importance in any national political turnaround, citing the state's diversity and substantial voter population as key factors. He disclosed that Lagos currently has about 10 million registered voters, and the party must mobilize at least five million committed supporters to achieve victory in the 2027 elections.
A Fresh Political Alternative
In his remarks, Adebisi Jegede, the ADC leader in Oshodi/Isolo, positioned the party as the fresh alternative Nigerians have been craving during what he described as a critical political moment for the country.
Jegede outlined the party's foundational principles, stating that the ADC stands on the pillars of unity, equality, equity and fairness. He recalled the vision of Nigeria's founding fathers for a nation where every citizen's life matters, justice is not selective, and all Nigerians feel secure in their homeland.
The local leader expressed gratitude to what he called the patriotic leaders of the ADC for providing an alternative political platform, expressing confidence that supporters had made the right political decision that would eventually yield the dividends of democracy desired by all Nigerians.
Jegede noted that the significant turnout at the mobilization rally demonstrated the growing influence of ADC in Oshodi/Isolo and the commitment of residents who are aligning with the party's political mission to transform governance in Lagos State.
