Anambra 2025 Election: ADC Raises Alarm Over Vote-Buying, Warns of 2027 Risk
ADC Alarms: Anambra Election Undermines Democracy

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has issued a stark warning about the state of Nigerian democracy, labeling the recently concluded Anambra State governorship election a heavily monetized process that compromised democratic ideals.

Election Described as Cash-Drenched Spectacle

In a strongly worded statement released on Sunday, November 9, 2025, the ADC National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, accused Governor Charles Soludo and his party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), of engaging in widespread cash-for-votes during the election held on Saturday, November 8.

Abdullahi did not mince words, stating, "What unfolded in Anambra was, regrettably, a cash-drenched spectacle that was more of a bazaar than an election." He alleged that the electoral process was severely compromised by financial inducement, with bundles of naira notes changing hands at polling units across the state in full view of officials and security personnel.

Allegations of Collusion and Electoral Act Violations

The ADC spokesperson expressed deep concern over what he described as the silence of security agencies and the inaction of electoral officials during the election, suggesting their behavior bordered on collusion. He asserted that the foundation for these violations was laid by Governor Soludo himself well ahead of the election.

According to Abdullahi, "This election was highly monetized, with the incumbent and his party seen to have participated in several forms and styles of cash-for-votes." He emphasized that these actions constituted a brazen violation of the Electoral Act, fundamentally undermining the democratic process.

The criticism references Governor Soludo's earlier pledge of cash rewards to APGA members who delivered their wards, which the ADC had previously condemned. The party's concerns were echoed by Senator Uche Ekwunife, the APC deputy governorship candidate, who also accused APGA of vote-buying.

Serious Implications for Nigeria's Democratic Future

The ADC raised a crucial alarm about the potential implications for future elections, particularly the 2027 general elections. The party warned that Nigerians have every reason to be worried if the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) intends to conduct the 2027 polls in the same manner.

"If this is the manner in which INEC intends to conduct the 2027 general election, then Nigerians have every reason to be worried about the future of our democracy," Abdullahi stated. He highlighted that this concern is particularly pressing given that Nigeria's democratic health is under intense international scrutiny.

The ADC candidate has formally rejected the election result, citing the alleged electoral malpractices. The party characterizes vote-buying as a dangerous setback to Nigeria's democratic development and a clear betrayal of the people's will, calling for urgent reforms to protect the integrity of future elections.
