ADC Secures Rainbow Event Center for National Convention Amidst Challenges
The African Democratic Congress (ADC), under the leadership of Senator David Mark as National Chairman and Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary, has officially secured the National Rainbow Event Center in Garki as the venue for its upcoming national convention. The event is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, 14 April 2026, barring any last-minute changes. This decision comes after the party faced significant obstacles in securing a location, with two other venues denying their requests without providing clear reasons, according to insider sources.
Venue Denials and Strategic Response
Initially, the ADC approached the Abuja Transport Hilton hotels for their convention, but the request was turned down, prompting allegations of sabotage. In response, the party has kept the Rainbow Event Center under tight wraps as its definitive choice. This venue holds historical significance for the ADC, as it previously hosted the party's last National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting. Situated adjacent to the Nigerian Police Force Headquarters, the center is now set to host the second NEC meeting and the forthcoming national convention, with the ADC leadership having communicated this information to state chapters under strict instructions to avoid escalation.
Legal and Political Context
The convention occurs against a backdrop of intense political and legal challenges for the ADC. The party is currently embroiled in a survival battle against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which has suspended recognition of the David Mark-led ADC, citing an Appeal Court order to maintain the status quo ante-bellum. This move by INEC, under the leadership of Prof Joash Amupitan, has created a leadership vacuum within the party, leading the ADC to seek intervention from the Supreme Court. In preparation for the convention, the ADC has formally requested police protection from the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Olatunji Disu, as well as security support from the Director of State Services and the Comptroller of Civil Defence Corps.
Logistical Preparations and Future Implications
As the Rainbow Event Center is being quietly and moderately decorated for the event, the ADC plans to fully occupy the venue in the early hours of Tuesday. This strategic move underscores the party's determination to proceed with its national convention despite external pressures and internal uncertainties. The outcome of this gathering could have significant implications for the ADC's future, particularly in resolving its disputes with INEC and solidifying its leadership structure in the face of ongoing political turbulence.
