As Niger State prepares for crucial local government elections, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has issued a powerful appeal for peaceful participation and political tolerance among citizens.
Call for Calm During Electoral Process
The religious body emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and order throughout the electoral period, urging all stakeholders to prioritize the state's stability over political interests.
"CAN recognizes the significance of these local government elections in strengthening democracy at the grassroots level," stated a representative from the association. "We implore all political actors, security agencies, and the electorate to conduct themselves responsibly."
Emphasis on Violence-Free Elections
The association specifically addressed the need for violence-free elections, highlighting that peaceful electoral processes are fundamental to Nigeria's democratic growth. CAN encouraged political parties to focus on issue-based campaigns rather than engaging in activities that could incite violence or create division among communities.
"Local government elections represent the closest form of governance to the people," the statement continued. "Therefore, it is imperative that citizens exercise their franchise without fear or intimidation."
Appeal to Security Agencies
CAN also called on security operatives to provide adequate protection for voters, electoral officials, and materials throughout the election period. The association stressed that neutral and professional conduct from security forces is crucial for building public confidence in the electoral process.
The religious body concluded by urging all registered voters in Niger State to come out en masse and peacefully elect their local government representatives, emphasizing that active citizen participation strengthens democratic institutions and promotes good governance at the grassroots level.
