Gombe Assembly Transforms into One-Party Legislature After Final PDP Defection
The political landscape in Gombe State has undergone a significant shift as the State House of Assembly has officially become a one-party legislature. This transformation occurred following the defection of the last remaining member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Yakubu Daniel, to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Daniel, who represents the Billiri East Constituency, formally joined the APC on Saturday, a move that consolidates the party's dominance by granting it control over all 24 seats in the Assembly. This development effectively leaves the opposition without any representation in the legislative body, marking a pivotal moment in the state's political dynamics.
Governor Yahaya Hails Defection as Endorsement of Administration
Governor Muhammadu Yahaya, who personally received the lawmaker into the APC, lauded the defection as a robust endorsement of his administration's efforts. In his remarks, Yahaya emphasized that this step reflects a strong vote of confidence in the leadership, policies, and inclusive governance style implemented under his watch. He stated, "This is a strong vote of confidence in our leadership, our policies and our inclusive style of governance. For the last remaining opposition member in the Assembly to take this step speaks volumes about the direction we are taking in Gombe State." The governor further attributed the growing acceptance of the APC across the state to his administration's commitment to transparency, fairness, and effective service delivery.
Yahaya also extended an open invitation to others, highlighting the party's principles of unity, justice, and equal opportunity. He remarked, "Our doors remain open to all who are willing to join us in building a better Gombe. The APC is a party that believes in unity, justice and equal opportunity." This defection is part of a broader trend, as it follows earlier exits by other opposition lawmakers, which had gradually diminished the PDP's presence in the Assembly before its complete disappearance. The consolidation of power underscores the APC's strengthening grip on Gombe State's political arena, potentially influencing future legislative and governance processes.
