INEC Addresses Stakeholder Concerns Over 2027 Election Schedule

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued clarifications regarding the recently published Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Election, following concerns raised by Muslim stakeholders about potential conflicts with nationally recognized holidays.

Confirmed Election Dates and Constitutional Compliance

INEC confirmed that, in strict adherence to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), the Electoral Act, 2022, and INEC's own Guidelines and Regulations for the Conduct of Elections, 2022, the Presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for Saturday, 20th February 2027. Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are slated for Saturday, 6th March 2027.

The Commission specifically cited Paragraph 2 of its Regulation, which states: "Election to the office of President and Vice President, as well as National Assembly, shall hold on the Third Saturday of February of any General Election year, while election to the Office of Governor and Deputy Governor and the State Houses of Assembly shall hold two weeks thereafter."

Acknowledgment of Holiday Conflicts and Voter Participation Concerns

INEC has formally acknowledged that the fixed election dates coincide with certain nationally recognized holidays, prompting significant concerns from stakeholders, particularly within the Muslim community, about potential impacts on voter participation and accessibility.

The Commission assured the Nigerian public that it is carefully reviewing all representations received and is prepared to engage in further consultations to ensure the election process remains inclusive and accessible to all eligible voters.

"The Commission remains sensitive to all legitimate concerns that may impact electoral participation and the overall conduct of elections," INEC stated in its official communication.

Commitment to Transparency and Possible Legislative Adjustments

While considering potential adjustments to address these concerns, INEC emphasized that any changes will strictly adhere to constitutional and statutory provisions. The Commission indicated that it may seek legislative intervention if required to resolve conflicts with national observances and holidays.

Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, reiterated INEC's dedication to transparency, inclusivity, and the credible conduct of the 2027 General Election.

"The public will be duly informed of any further developments," Haruna stated in a release dated 13th February 2026, emphasizing the Commission's commitment to keeping all stakeholders informed throughout the process.

Background: Previous Budget Proposal for 2027 Elections

This development follows INEC's previous proposal of a total budget of N873.78 billion for the conduct of the 2027 general elections. The substantial budget allocation includes significant resources dedicated to election operations, technological enhancements, and capital expenditure, underscoring the Commission's preparation for what promises to be a crucial electoral cycle.

The Commission's responsiveness to stakeholder concerns demonstrates its evolving approach to electoral management, balancing constitutional requirements with practical considerations for voter participation and national harmony.
