Kwara APC Groups Call for Violence-Free 2027 General Elections
Political groups within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State have issued a strong appeal to all political actors in the state to eschew violence, rancour, and other vices that could potentially mar the upcoming 2027 general elections. The call was made by the Asa Progressive Movement (APM), an APC-affiliated group, which also advocated for peaceful and issue-based campaigns in the lead-up to the crucial polls.
Endorsement Event in Afon Highlights Peaceful Agenda
The movement articulated its stance during an endorsement programme held in Afon, the headquarters of Asa Local Government Area. The event was organized to express support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's bid for a second term and to endorse the governorship ambition of Hon. Bashir Omolaja Bolarinwa, a former state chairman of the APC. In a communiqué jointly signed by the APM coordinator, Engineer Daud Oladipupo Babatunde, and the secretary, Comrade Yusuf Mutiu Akorede, the group emphasized its commitment to fostering a conducive political environment.
The communiqué stated: "We are committed to a peaceful, issue-based campaign and urge all political actors to shun violence, hate speech, and any conduct capable of heating up the polity. We call on all well-meaning sons and daughters of Kwara State, regardless of party affiliation, to join this movement for the restoration and advancement of our dear state. The 2027 election is about the future of our children and must rise above petty sentiments."
APM Backs Bolarinwa's Governorship Bid
In a significant political move, the Asa Progressive Movement threw its full weight behind the aspiration of Hon. Bashir Omolaja Bolarinwa, expressing confidence in his leadership and credentials. The group highlighted Bolarinwa's extensive political experience and his vision for addressing key state issues.
The communiqué further read: "We pass a vote of confidence in Hon. Bashir Omolaja Bolarinwa and in the leadership of our great party, the APC, for presenting to the people a competent, credible, and compassionate candidate. All structures of the movement, from state to polling unit levels, are hereby directed to commence immediate and intensive mobilization for the candidature of Hon. Bashir Omolaja Bolarinwa. Every member is now an ambassador of this project."
Rationale Behind the Endorsement
The APM's endorsement of Bolarinwa was based on his proven track record of public service and his proposed agenda for Kwara State. The communiqué detailed his qualifications and plans, which include:
- A history of service as a former councilor, local government chairman, and member of the Federal House of Representatives.
- Leadership as former state chairman of the APC, where he led the party to a 100% victory in the 2019 elections.
- Former board chairman of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).
- A commitment to tackling insecurity, youth unemployment, and agricultural revival in the state.
- Attributes of integrity, accessibility, and a capacity to unite the diverse peoples of Kwara State.
The APM concluded: "The APM unanimously endorses Bolarinwa as its preferred candidate for the office of Governor in the 2027 general elections under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC)."
This development underscores the growing political activities and preparations within Kwara State as stakeholders begin to position themselves for the 2027 elections, with a clear emphasis on maintaining peace and promoting substantive issues over divisive tactics.
