Ghanaian President John Mahama has stressed the importance of the government ensuring it pays its contractors on time. Speaking at a recent function, President Mahama humorously noted that when contractors are paid, the benefits ripple through the economy, reaching even side chicks, hairdressers, and tailors.
Mahama's Remarks on Contractor Payments
In a video that has gone viral and left many laughing, President Mahama explained the economic impact of paying contractors. He said: 'When contractors get paid, they go buy Land Cruisers for themselves. Car dealers also benefit. Even the spouses, the wives, and the side chicks also benefit because when you are paid and they get something, they give their wives and side chicks some of the money. And that is an important avenue because you know where that one too goes... When the spouses and side chicks get, hairdressers get, dressmakers get, jewelry shops get, handbag sellers get... So do not discount it at all.'
Wider Economic Impact
President Mahama's comments highlight the multiplier effect of government payments to contractors. By ensuring contractors are paid promptly, the government stimulates economic activity across various sectors, from luxury goods to everyday services. The remarks have sparked widespread discussion on social media, with many applauding the president's candid and humorous approach to discussing economic policy.
