Nasarawa Lawmaker Advocates for Competence Over Identity Politics in 2027 Elections
Solomon Yakubu Akwashiki, a member of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly representing Lafia Central Constituency, has issued a strong appeal to Nigerians, particularly voters in Nasarawa State, urging them to reject politicians who exploit religion, ethnicity, and tribal sentiments for political gain. Akwashiki, who chairs the House Committee on Public Accounts, emphasized this call during a significant empowerment initiative in Lafia, where he distributed items valued at ₦70 million to his constituents.
Empowerment Initiative Highlights Commitment to Constituents
As part of his constituency intervention, the lawmaker distributed four Sharon buses, 22 motorcycles, and 60 grinding machines, alongside cash support targeted at women and students. Akwashiki described this effort as a reflection of his dedication to improving the living standards of vulnerable groups and fostering self-reliance among residents of the Lafia/Obi Federal Constituency. He assured those who have not yet benefited from the program that more interventions are in the pipeline, spanning various sectors such as borehole projects, electricity supply, employment opportunities, education support—including JAMB registrations—and healthcare initiatives.
Warning Against Divisive Politics and Call for Unity
Akwashiki warned that identity-based politics is a major factor undermining Nigeria's unity and development, posing a serious threat to national cohesion. He stressed the need for voters to prioritize competence and integrity when electing leaders, advocating for a shift away from divisive political tactics. In a notable announcement, he declared his intention to contest for the House of Representatives seat for Lafia/Obi in the 2027 elections under the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Support from Political Leaders and Stakeholders
The Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Danladi Jatau, commended Akwashiki for delivering democratic dividends to his constituents, noting that lawmakers in the state, despite belonging to different political parties, continue to work in unity for good governance. Jatau also praised the administration of Governor Abdullahi Sule and called on Nigerians to embrace unity, peace, and cooperation irrespective of political, ethnic, or religious differences.
Several stakeholders, including SDP National Chairman Sadiq Abubakar Gombe, the party's 2023 presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo, and former Information Minister Labaran Maku, lauded Akwashiki for positively impacting his constituency. They urged Nigerians to support Social Democratic Party candidates at all levels in the 2027 general elections, describing Akwashiki's projects as people-oriented and impactful.
Jatau remarked, "This is the third time I am attending his empowerment programme. He is doing well and has his people at heart. The essence of leadership is to show love to your people and appreciate them for their support and votes. That is what I am doing. When righteous people are in power, the people rejoice. I urge Nigerians to shun ethnic and religious politics."
