Chief Chekwas Okorie, the Convener of the Igbo Agenda Dialogue (IAD), has issued a powerful call to action, declaring that the Igbo nation must fully deploy its democratic strength in the 2027 General Elections to reverse decades of political marginalisation.
A Path Away from Marginalisation
Speaking during the second meeting of the IAD held at Chelsea Hotel in Abuja, Okorie expressed deep concern over the political state of the South-East. He lamented that despite the Igbo being one of Nigeria's largest ethnic groups with an unmatched geographical spread, they have been left vulnerable to what he described as avoidable marginalisation and ridicule.
He attributed this situation directly to decades of political disunity and voter apathy within the region. Okorie identified a clear and viable solution: united political participation.
The Blueprint for Political Redesign
Okorie laid out a strategic vision for the future. He emphatically stated that with a concerted effort focused on unity, voter mobilisation, and strategic engagement, the Igbo people have the potential to fundamentally redesign the political map of Nigeria.
This political restructuring, he argued, is the only way for the Igbo to reclaim their rightful place within the country's governance structure. He believes that harnessing their collective power at the ballot box is the key to altering their political destiny.
Looking Ahead to the 2026 Summit
As a concrete step towards this goal, Okorie announced that the Igbo Agenda Dialogue will present a major resolution at the proposed 2026 Igbo Political Summit in Enugu. This sets the stage for a coordinated strategy ahead of the crucial 2027 polls.
He concluded with a direct appeal, calling on all eligible Igbo people to participate actively in all democratic processes, from voter registration to the final act of casting their ballots. The message is clear: the time for passive observation is over.
