Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has endorsed Engr. Mustapha Gubio as a gubernatorial aspirant for the 2027 election under the All Progressives Congress (APC). Gubio, a former Commissioner for Works and the Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (RRR), has officially obtained his nomination form.
Political Moves Signal Primary Elections
The actions of the former commissioner indicate that the state APC may not adopt a consensus method for selecting its candidate. Instead, the party could hold primary elections in Maiduguri, the state capital. The Guardian gathered on Wednesday that Gubio presented his governorship aspirations to Governor Zulum at the Government House, accompanied by Senate Chief Whip Mohammed Tahir Monguno, who represents Borno North Senatorial District.
Multiple Aspirants Expected
Beyond Gubio, there are speculations among party stakeholders that more than a dozen aspirants will obtain their expression of interest and nomination forms ahead of the 2027 general elections. Governor Zulum has repeatedly stated that he does not know who will succeed him, but believes God will provide the next governor.
APC stakeholders, including traditional and religious leaders, as well as the organized private sector and professionals, are targeting a governor who can effectively sustain and continue the numerous socio-economic development projects and programmes executed under Zulum's administration.
