Senate Urged to Fast-Track Tegbe’s Power Minister Confirmation

The Senate has been called upon to accelerate the confirmation process of Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe as the Minister of Power, following his nomination by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This development comes after the resignation of former Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu, who stepped down on April 30, 2026, to pursue his gubernatorial ambitions in Oyo State.

Chief Moses Ayom, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of BYD Motors Nigeria Limited, made this appeal in a statement on Friday. He commended President Tinubu for nominating Tegbe, describing it as a strategic move to revitalize Nigeria's struggling electricity sector.

Ayom highlighted that Tegbe's extensive experience in both finance and power sectors positions him well to drive the administration's power sector reform agenda. He noted that the nominee possesses the right combination of expertise and industry knowledge to deliver lasting solutions to the sector's challenges.

According to Ayom, Tegbe's professional background includes significant involvement in regulatory and institutional reforms with key agencies such as the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company. He urged lawmakers to fast-track the confirmation process to allow Tegbe to assume office and begin implementing the Federal Government's power sector reset agenda.

"Every Nigerian knows that the power sector remains one of our biggest challenges. The President's swift nomination of Tegbe underscores his commitment to addressing the electricity situation in the country," Ayom stated.

He also called on Nigerians to support the nominee and maintain confidence in the administration's reform efforts. Ayom expressed optimism that ongoing initiatives under the Renewed Hope Agenda would soon lead to improved electricity supply nationwide. He added that Tegbe's eventual confirmation would mark a critical step toward delivering reliable and sustainable power to homes and businesses across the country.
