ARCAN to Honour Retired Envoys and ECOWAS Founders at 2025 Awards Ceremony
The Association of Retired Career Ambassadors of Nigeria (ARCAN) is set to host its 2025 awards ceremony on Saturday, April 18, 2026. This prestigious event will be held simultaneously at two key locations: the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja and the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs in Lagos, underscoring its national importance and diplomatic relevance.
Recognising Diplomatic Excellence
Organised annually by ARCAN, the awards ceremony aims to celebrate the lasting contributions of Nigeria's retired career diplomats. These individuals have played a pivotal role in shaping the country's foreign policy over the years. In the 2025 edition, 18 former ambassadors will be honoured, with several receiving posthumous recognition for their dedication to advancing Nigeria's diplomatic interests and enhancing its global presence.
According to the organisers, the awards are designed not only to acknowledge individual achievements but also to preserve the legacy of professionalism and commitment that defines Nigeria's diplomatic corps. This recognition serves as a reaffirmation of the core values that have guided the nation's foreign engagements since gaining independence.
Special Tribute to ECOWAS Founders
This year's ceremony holds added historical significance with the introduction of a special category dedicated to notable African leaders who contributed to the establishment of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). As the regional body marks its 51st anniversary, it remains a cornerstone of economic integration and political cooperation in Africa.
Under this special category, three prominent figures will be honoured for their roles in founding ECOWAS:
- General Yakubu Gowon, former Head of State of Nigeria (1966-1975)
- The late President Gnassingbé Eyadéma of Togo, who led his country from 1967 to 2005
- Professor Adebayo Adedeji, a former Nigerian minister and distinguished international civil servant who served as Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa
The association noted that this recognition is part of a broader commemoration of ECOWAS's golden jubilee, with activities scheduled to conclude later in May. By highlighting the contributions of these founding figures, ARCAN aims to draw attention to the vision and cooperation that underpinned the creation of the regional body and its ongoing relevance in addressing contemporary challenges in West Africa.
A Growing Tradition in Diplomacy
Established six years ago, the ARCAN awards have become a notable feature within Nigeria's diplomatic community. They provide a platform for acknowledging the professionalism, discipline, and lifelong commitment demonstrated by career ambassadors who have represented Nigeria in various capacities worldwide. This event continues to foster a sense of pride and continuity in the nation's diplomatic heritage.
