The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has issued a forceful condemnation of a brutal reported assault on civilians in Sudan that resulted in massive casualties.
Details of the Kalogi Atrocity
The condemnation, delivered on 7 December 2025 by his spokesperson Nuur Mohamud Sheekh, addresses a horrific incident in Kalogi, South Kordofan. Reports indicate that more than 100 civilians lost their lives. Among the victims were dozens of women and children who were inside a pre-school facility at the time of the attack.
Youssouf described the deliberate targeting of non-combatants, including children, educators, and medical personnel, as a flagrant violation of international humanitarian and human rights law. The statement expressed profound alarm at the repeated and escalating atrocities against civilians in the region.
AU's Strong Demands and Calls for Action
The AU Commission Chairperson voiced deep concern over continued military actions, including aerial bombardment, drone attacks, and assaults on vital civilian infrastructure such as hospitals and schools.
In response, Youssouf made several urgent demands:
- An immediate and unconditional ceasefire by all conflicting parties to halt the bloodshed.
- The full protection of civilians, with special attention to children, women, and the elderly, in strict compliance with international law.
- Unhindered humanitarian access to allow life-saving assistance to reach the affected communities.
The Path to Accountability and Peace
Beyond the immediate crisis, the African Union leader stressed the critical need for accountability for all violations. He called for independent investigations to ensure that those responsible for these heinous acts are brought to justice.
The concluding part of the statement reaffirmed the African Union's solidarity with the people of Sudan. It reiterated the body's commitment to collaborating with regional and international partners to prevent further atrocities and support a sustainable return to dialogue, peace, and stability in the war-torn nation.
