NATO Leader Supports Trump's Iran Action While Rejecting Alliance Military Role
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte on Thursday, March 5, publicly praised US President Donald Trump's decision to authorize military strikes targeting Iran's ballistic missile capabilities. However, Rutte explicitly rejected any suggestion that the NATO alliance would become directly involved in the ongoing conflict.
Rutte Commends US Objective to Eradicate Iranian Threat
In a detailed video interview, Rutte stated, "We support the president in taking out that capability," directly referencing the US military's objective to dismantle the Iranian regime's ballistic missile program. He emphasized the critical need to ensure Iran cannot pose a lethal threat to neighboring nations and regions. "We have to be sure going forward that Iran, this republic, is not able again to pose a death threat to its neighbors; to Israel, the Middle East, to Europe," Rutte added, underscoring the broader security concerns.
NATO's Defensive Posture Highlighted Amid Regional Tensions
The secretary-general's comments came just one day after Turkey reported that NATO air defense systems successfully intercepted an Iranian missile heading toward its airspace. Rutte condemned what he described as a "serious" incident, though Iran has denied any involvement. He pointed to the successful interception as a clear demonstration of NATO's "360-degree approach" to defending alliance territory, showcasing its robust defensive capabilities.
Rutte Clarifies NATO's Support Role Without Direct Involvement
Despite his strong backing for Trump's actions, Rutte firmly rebuffed any notion that NATO is actively engaged in the conflict. He asserted, "NATO is not itself involved here," while acknowledging that NATO allies are providing essential enabling support. Rutte explained that the alliance serves as a crucial power projection platform for the United States, stating, "NATO, in that sense, is also this power projection platform for the United States because without European allies, the US would have found it very difficult."
Defending Praise for Trump's Leadership on Iran
When challenged by Reuters journalist Andrew Gray regarding his support for Trump, Rutte defended his position by highlighting the necessity of decisive action against Iran. He described Iran as an "exporter of terrorism and chaos" and argued that Trump's leadership in addressing this threat warranted praise. Rutte concluded, "This decisive action to take out this capability of Iran ... I think if the president of a country is providing that type of leadership, some praise is warranted."
