Nigeria Suspends Christian Pilgrimage to Israel Amid Iran-Israel Conflict

The Federal Government of Nigeria has ordered an immediate and temporary suspension of all Christian pilgrimages to Israel. This decisive action comes in response to the escalating security situation in the Middle East, fueled by the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict. The directive, which affects both government-organized and privately arranged spiritual journeys, was announced on Tuesday by the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC).

Precautionary Measure for Pilgrim Safety

In a formal statement issued from Abuja, the Executive Secretary of the NCPC, Stephen Adegbite, clarified that this suspension is a precautionary measure. It was deemed necessary following recent alarming developments in the region, including Israel's declaration of a state of emergency. The commission emphasized its unwavering commitment to prioritizing the safety and welfare of Nigerian pilgrims above all else.

The suspension is comprehensive, halting all pilgrimage activities to Israel until further notice. Adegbite confirmed that this includes exercises being managed by private pilgrimage operators. He assured all stakeholders that the NCPC is vigilantly monitoring the volatile situation and will provide timely updates as events continue to unfold.

Successful Conclusion of Previous Pilgrimage

Despite the current suspension, the commission disclosed that it had successfully concluded the 2025 Main Pilgrimage exercise to Israel and Jordan prior to the recent escalation of tensions. The final batch of Nigerian Christian pilgrims returned safely to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport on March 3, 2026. This completion underscores the government's ability to manage such spiritual journeys effectively under normal circumstances.

The Deputy Director and Head of Media and Public Relations, Celestine Toruka, who signed the official statement, expressed appreciation for the understanding and cooperation of the media and relevant partners during this period of uncertainty. Adegbite further called on all Nigerians to join in prayers for peace in Jerusalem and across the broader Middle East region.

Context of Regional Security Concerns

This governmental move aligns with a broader international trend, as security concerns continue to mount sharply in the Middle East. Numerous countries are currently reviewing travel advisories and suspending non-essential trips to the area to protect their citizens. The decision reflects a proactive approach to national duty of care, ensuring that Nigerian pilgrims are not exposed to potential risks associated with the conflict.

The suspension follows previous warnings from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to Nigerian Christian pilgrims. During the launch of the NCPC's 2025 Delayed Easter Pilgrimage in Owerri, Imo State, the President had implored pilgrims to be of exemplary character and to remember Nigeria in their prayers. He sternly warned against any temptations to abscond and become illegal immigrants, threatening stiff consequences for those who might flout this directive.
