Nigerians Evacuated from Iran to Armenia Amid Regional Conflict
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has announced that Nigerian citizens willing to depart Iran are being safely escorted to the border with Armenia by officials from the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran. This evacuation effort is part of a coordinated response to ensure the security and well-being of Nigerians abroad during the ongoing regional hostilities.
Safe Passage and Government Vigilance
In a statement released on social media, NIDCOM emphasized that the operation aims to provide a smooth and secure passage for those seeking to leave Iran. The commission confirmed that, so far, no Nigerian in Iran has been directly affected by the conflict. Government officials are stationed at the border to receive and assist evacuees, highlighting the Federal Government's commitment to protecting its citizens globally.
The statement read: "The Federal Government is vigilant and effectively responding to the safety and well-being of Nigerians across the world." NIDCOM added that the evacuation is being coordinated with Armenian authorities to facilitate the safe movement of Nigerians crossing the border, ensuring all necessary protocols are followed.
Injuries in the UAE and Evacuation Challenges
Meanwhile, reports indicate that at least one Nigerian was among the 122 people injured following the interception of Iranian ballistic missiles in the United Arab Emirates. The UAE Ministry of Defence confirmed the injuries but did not provide a breakdown by nationality. Authorities have not yet disclosed the exact number of Nigerians remaining in Iran or other conflict-affected areas of the Middle East.
Some Nigerians residing in Gulf states have called on the Federal Government to prepare repatriation flights for citizens seeking evacuation. NIDCOM Chairperson Abike Dabiri-Erewa stated earlier that evacuation flights would commence once regional airspace becomes safe. She explained that immediate repatriation is not feasible due to the closure of many airspaces in the region for security reasons.
Emergency Support and Future Steps
To assist Nigerians in affected countries, NIDCOM has shared emergency hotlines for contact and support. The commission continues to monitor the situation closely, working with international partners to ensure the safety of Nigerian nationals. As the conflict evolves, further updates on evacuation plans and repatriation efforts are expected to be communicated through official channels.
