Senegal Prime Minister Denounces Moroccan Court's Sentencing of Football Supporters

In a significant diplomatic development, Senegal's Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, has publicly criticized a Moroccan court's ruling to imprison 18 Senegalese football fans. The supporters were arrested after a pitch invasion during the Africa Cup of Nations final held in Rabat on January 18, where Senegal secured a 1–0 victory over the host nation.

Details of the Incident and Legal Proceedings

The arrests occurred in Morocco following the chaotic match, with authorities accusing the fans of engaging in violence against security forces and causing property damage. Reports indicate that some supporters attempted to storm the pitch and allegedly threw projectiles, leading to their detention.

On Thursday, February 19, a Moroccan court delivered its verdict, sentencing the 18 individuals to prison terms ranging from three months to one year. Additionally, the court imposed fines of up to $545 on each supporter, further escalating the legal consequences of their actions.

Prime Minister Sonko's Strong Reaction

Addressing the Senegalese parliament on Tuesday, February 24, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko expressed deep disappointment over the handling of the case. He emphasized that the matter appears to extend beyond the realm of sports, which he finds particularly regrettable.

"For two countries that call each other friends, like Morocco and Senegal, things should not have gone this far," Sonko stated. He further asserted that Morocco's approach to the situation "does not honour" the longstanding and historically positive relationship between the two nations.

Senegal's Diplomatic Efforts and Potential Actions

The Prime Minister reassured the public that Senegal has undertaken all necessary diplomatic steps to secure the release of its citizens. He highlighted that the government is actively engaged in resolving the issue through appropriate channels.

Moreover, Sonko indicated that Senegal might invoke a bilateral agreement with Morocco that allows for the mutual transfer of convicted persons. This measure could be employed if required to facilitate a resolution and ensure the supporters' return to Senegal.

The incident has sparked broader discussions about international sports diplomacy and the treatment of foreign nationals in judicial systems. As both nations navigate this sensitive issue, the outcome will likely influence future bilateral interactions and cooperation in various sectors, including sports and security.
