Nigeria's Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has embarked on a diplomatic mission to Abidjan, the economic capital of Côte d'Ivoire. He departed from Abuja on Sunday, December 7, 2025, to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at a significant political event in West Africa.
A High-Level Delegation for a Historic Swearing-In
The Vice President is leading a Nigerian delegation to the inauguration ceremony of Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara. The event, scheduled for Monday, December 8, 2025, will be held at the Presidential Palace in Abidjan. This marks the beginning of Ouattara's fourth term in office, following his re-election on October 25, 2025.
Shettima will join a gathering of other African and global leaders to witness the historic occasion. His presence underscores Nigeria's commitment to fostering strong bilateral relationships within the region.
Strengthening Nigeria-Côte d'Ivoire Partnership
The diplomatic ties between Nigeria and Côte d'Ivoire are notably warm and multifaceted. Both nations are key collaborators within regional bodies like the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union. Their cooperation spans crucial areas including:
- Regional security and stability initiatives.
- Trade and economic development.
- Joint efforts in agriculture and the digital economy.
This partnership is formally structured through a Bi-National Commission and reinforced by several bilateral agreements. Key areas of collaboration under these agreements include combating human trafficking and fostering economic growth.
Beyond formal structures, robust informal trade networks and a substantial Nigerian diaspora community living in Côte d'Ivoire further cement the deep socio-economic connections between the two countries.
Delegation Composition and Return Plans
Vice President Shettima is not travelling alone. He is accompanied by a distinguished team that includes:
- Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, the President of the ECOWAS Commission.
- Senator Abubakar Sani Bello, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs.
- Hon. Usman Zannah, a member of the House of Representatives representing the Kaga/Gubio/Magumeri Federal Constituency.
The inclusion of these officials highlights the importance Nigeria places on this event and on its regional diplomatic engagements. Vice President Shettima is expected to return to Abuja immediately after the conclusion of the inauguration ceremony.
