UN Chief Guterres Issues Dire Warning on Middle East Crisis
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a stark warning that the Middle East is being "pushed to breaking point" due to escalating violence, shipping attacks, and a deepening humanitarian crisis. The UN chief made these urgent remarks while accepting the Atatürk International Award for Peace in Türkiye, where he called for an immediate ceasefire and a swift return to diplomatic negotiations to resolve the ongoing regional conflict.
Call for Immediate Ceasefire and Upholding International Law
Guterres emphasized that all parties involved in the conflict must cease hostilities without delay, uphold international law, protect civilians, and engage in meaningful dialogue. "Around the world, we hear much talk of peace, but we see far too little of it," he stated, highlighting the global failure to prevent violence. He pointed out that international law is being disregarded, power politics are on the rise, and inequalities are widening, exacerbating the crisis.
Global Consequences and Technological Risks
The UN chief warned that the consequences of the Middle East conflict are cascading globally, disrupting trade, driving up energy and food prices, and increasing instability. He specifically cited:
- Massive military strikes by the United States and Israel, followed by attacks by Iran on several countries, which pose a grave threat to international peace and security.
- New technologies, including artificial intelligence, which risk accelerating violence rather than preventing it.
- Skyrocketing military spending, contrasted with a freefall in lifesaving aid, leaving vulnerable populations to suffer the most.
"The region and the world desperately need an off-ramp," Guterres stressed, asserting that de-escalation and dialogue are the only viable paths forward to avert further catastrophe.
Solidarity Visit During Ramadan
Guterres' visit to Türkiye was part of his annual solidarity trip to a Muslim nation during the holy month of Ramadan. He expressed that these visits serve as a powerful reminder of the true spirit of Islam: compassion, community, and empathy. "This Ramadan, I felt strongly that my solidarity visit must be here, in Türkiye. I came to shine a global spotlight on the extraordinary and generous spirit of the Turkish people," he said, honoring their humanitarian efforts.
Award Acceptance and Tribute to UN Staff
In accepting the Atatürk International Award for Peace, Guterres dedicated it to United Nations staff worldwide, recognizing their humanitarian work and remembering aid workers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. He concluded with a heartfelt plea: "Together, let us give peace a chance," urging global cooperation to address the escalating crisis and prevent further suffering in the Middle East and beyond.
