Kano's ₦1.37 Trillion 2026 Budget Focuses on Education

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has presented a massive ₦1.37 trillion budget proposal for the 2026 fiscal year to the state House of Assembly, with significant allocations earmarked for education, infrastructure, and healthcare development.

Budget Breakdown and Key Allocations

The proposed budget, officially named "Budget of Infrastructure, Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development," totals ₦1,368,127,929,271.00 and represents a substantial increase of over ₦432.9 billion compared to the 2025 appropriation of ₦935,132,792,206.62.

Governor Yusuf revealed that the budget maintains a capital-to-recurrent expenditure ratio of 68% to 32%, demonstrating his administration's commitment to development-focused spending. Specifically, ₦934,640,032,101.00 is allocated to capital expenditure while ₦433,487,897,170 is designated for recurrent expenditure.

Sectoral Distribution Highlights

The education sector emerges as the biggest beneficiary with an allocation of ₦405 billion, representing 30% of the total budget. This substantial investment underscores the government's priority on human capital development.

Infrastructure development follows closely with ₦346 billion (25% of the budget), while the health sector receives ₦212 billion (16% of the total). These three sectors combined account for 71% of the entire budget proposal.

Implementation and Legislative Response

Governor Yusuf expressed satisfaction with his administration's performance, noting that the 2025 budget achieved 75% implementation rate. He further claimed that his government has fulfilled 80% of its campaign blueprint promises, citing ongoing and completed projects across the state.

The Governor urged the House of Assembly to ensure speedy passage of the budget document to enable swift implementation. In response, Speaker Rt. Honorable Jibril Ismail Falgore commended the Governor's dedication to strategic policy implementation and pledged the assembly's commitment to ensuring a January-to-December budget cycle.

The Speaker also directed heads of Ministries, Departments, and Parastatals to prepare to defend their allocations during the budget defense sessions, ensuring proper scrutiny of the proposed spending plan.
