Oyo Assembly Passes N892bn 2026 Budget

The Oyo State House of Assembly has officially passed the state's appropriation bill for the 2026 fiscal year, approving a total budget of N891,985,074,480.79, which is rounded up to N892 billion.

Budget Breakdown and Legislative Scrutiny

The budget passage occurred during a plenary session on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, presided over by the Speaker, Adebo Ogundoyin. This followed weeks of detailed review by lawmakers, including committee assessments and budget defence sessions with commissioners and heads of various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

After making minor adjustments to the initial estimates presented by Governor Seyi Makinde, the Assembly finalised the figures. A detailed analysis shows that N389.3 billion is allocated for recurrent expenditure, while a larger share of N502.6 billion is dedicated to capital projects. This allocation underscores the government's commitment to development-focused spending.

Infrastructure Retains Top Priority

Despite the legislative amendments, which lawmakers stated were for fiscal balance and accountability, infrastructure development maintained the highest allocation within the budget. This reflects the administration's continued emphasis on constructing and upgrading critical public assets.

The significant capital expenditure is targeted at key sectors including:

  • Road construction and rehabilitation
  • Education facilities
  • Healthcare infrastructure
  • Other vital public utilities

A People-Oriented Fiscal Plan

Following the bill's passage, Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin commended the Assembly for conducting a thorough and transparent budgetary process. He emphasised that the lawmakers were guided by the need to ensure the 2026 appropriation is people-centric, driving economic growth and improving resident welfare.

Ogundoyin added that the extensive engagement with MDAs was designed to strengthen legislative oversight, ensuring that public funds are deployed effectively and in alignment with the aspirations of the people of Oyo State. The budget now awaits the governor's assent to become law.
