The Anambra State Government has announced that future road designs will include special lanes for bicycle riders on major roads within the state. This initiative aims to encourage cycling as a primary mode of transportation and enhance rider safety.
Commissioner's Announcement
Eddy Ibuzo, the state Commissioner for Transport, made this known during an interview with journalists in Awka on Friday. He emphasized that all road users, including pedestrians, deserve safety and should be accommodated in road designs.
Collaboration with Ministry of Works
Mr. Ibuzo stated that he would collaborate with the Ministry of Works to ensure bicycle lanes and walkways are included in road designs and contract terms. He noted that bicycle transport is common in advanced countries and offers both health and economic benefits.
Alignment with Development Agenda
The commissioner said the idea aligns with Governor Charles Soludo's vision of a long-term sustainable development agenda. He expressed concern that past road designs in the state neglected bicycle riders.
“Personally, I am worried that most of our roads in the past do not have bicycle riders in mind when they are being designed and constructed,” Mr. Ibuzo said. He cited examples from Europe, parts of Asia, and some African countries where bicycle transport is dominant and receives special attention.
Policy on Road Users
“Part of the policy of this administration is to ensure that every road user including motorists, bicycle riders and those walking are accommodated because they are all under transport,” he added. He called on contractors in the state to include bicycle lanes and walkways in their designs to address traffic and safety concerns.
Ban on Transport Union Levy Collection
Mr. Ibuzo also reiterated that transport union levy collection in Anambra remains banned. He urged anyone with information on such exploitation to report to his office for appropriate action.
