ASUU-PLASU Urges Plateau Govt to Implement New Salary Scheme for Lecturers
ASUU-PLASU Demands New Salary Scheme Implementation

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Plateau State University Branch, has called on the Plateau State Government to immediately implement the new salary scheme for lecturers, bypassing bureaucratic delays.

Union's Statement

In a statement released by the Chairperson, Dr. Vincent Choji, and Secretary, Dr. Lomka Iliya Kopdiya, the union noted that the new salary template, based on the Federal Government/ASUU agreement, was submitted to the University Management in February 2026. Despite this, lecturers remain on the old salary structure amidst harsh economic realities.

Workload and Health Concerns

The statement highlighted that while the state government and university management take credit for increased student enrollment and new faculties, the resulting workload on lecturers has been ignored. Over four lecturers have reportedly died from stress and heart-related complications in recent months.

Other Unaddressed Issues

Critical concerns such as campus security, high transportation costs, and lack of staff accommodation remain unresolved. The union also pointed out that other outstanding issues from the 2024 agreement between the state government and the union have been abandoned.

Demands

The union urgently demands the implementation of the new salary scheme with arrears from January 1, 2026, release of funds for pension and gratuity, and resolution of all pending issues to avert a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike.
