The Federal Government has ordered an immediate pause on all actions aimed at enforcing a ban on alcoholic drinks sold in sachets and small 200ml PET bottles. This suspension will remain in place until official consultations are concluded and a final policy is announced.
Government Halts Enforcement Following Legislative Pressure
This directive came from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF). It was issued in response to concerns formally raised by the House of Representatives Committee on Food and Drugs Administration and Control.
In a statement made public on Monday, Terrence Kuanum, the Special Adviser on Public Affairs to the SGF, confirmed the OSGF received an official letter from the House Committee. The correspondence, dated November 13, 2025 and referenced NASS/10/HR/CT.53/77, was signed by the committee's Deputy Chairman, Hon. Uchenna Harris Okonkwo.
The lawmakers' letter highlighted existing resolutions from the National Assembly on this issue and advised the government to proceed with caution regarding the proposed enforcement of the sachet alcohol ban.
OSGF Assumes Control of Policy Review Process
The OSGF stated that the matters raised by the legislators are now under its review. This action aligns with its statutory role as the Chairman of the Cabinet Secretariat and the central body for coordinating government policy implementation.
"Accordingly, all actions, decisions, or enforcement measures relating to the proposed sachet alcohol ban are to be suspended pending the conclusion of consultations and the issuance of a final directive," the office declared.
It issued a strong clarification, noting that any enforcement step taken by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) or any other government agency without proper clearance from the OSGF would be considered invalid. The public was advised to disregard such actions until an official government decision is communicated.
Comprehensive Review Promises Balanced Outcome
The OSGF assured Nigerians that it is undertaking a thorough evaluation of all factors related to the proposed ban. This review will consider several critical aspects:
- Resolutions passed by the National Assembly.
- Public health and safety concerns.
- The economic impact on manufacturers, retailers, and consumers.
- The broader national interest.
The office emphasized its commitment to reaching a balanced and lawful outcome. It promised that the public would be formally updated as soon as a final position on the alcohol policy is determined.
