KASU Lecturers Threaten Strike Over Unmet Demands

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) chapter at Kaduna State University (KASU) has issued a fresh threat to embark on a strike if its demands are not addressed by the end of May 2026.

Unfulfilled Promises

Dr. Usman Sadiq, a member of ASUU's media committee, stated in an interview that many promises made by the government following the last strike have not been fulfilled. He noted that the 2009 agreement with the Federal Government remains unimplemented by the state government, unlike in other northern states.

Promotion Arrears and University Autonomy

Sadiq highlighted the non-implementation of promotion arrears, with some lecturers promoted up to three years ago yet to receive corresponding salary increments. He also criticized the lack of university autonomy, requiring clearance from an authorized body for basic operations, which hampers efficiency.

He lamented that KASU, once a top state university, has seen many competent lecturers leave due to economic hardship and lack of motivation. He added that 80% of professors can no longer afford to drive to work.

Commendation and Ultimatum

Despite the grievances, Sadiq commended the government for clearing withheld salaries. However, he warned that patience is running out, and if demands are not met by May 2026, ASUU will be forced to resume strike action.
