Lagos Records 737,340 Traffic Violations, Plans State Licence

The Lagos State Government has reported a total of 737,340 traffic violations in 2025, detected through its Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera system. This announcement was made by the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, during the 2025 ministerial press briefing marking the third year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's second term.

Osiyemi stated that this figure highlights the state's growing reliance on intelligent traffic management and digital surveillance technology to enhance road safety and traffic enforcement. He noted that the ANPR system has significantly improved the ability to monitor and penalize traffic offenders across Lagos.

In collaboration with the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency and the Federal Road Safety Corps, the state processed 27,067 new driver's licence applications and renewed 29,810 licences during the review period. The total number of driver's licences processed stood at 56,877, while 1,158 International Driver's Permits were also issued.

Osiyemi further revealed that the state has finalized plans to introduce a Lagos State driver's licence within the next few weeks. This new licence will operate alongside the existing federal driver's licence under a collaborative arrangement between state and federal authorities. Motorists will have the option to obtain either the federal licence or the Lagos-issued licence.

The commissioner explained that this initiative aims to improve efficiency, reduce delays in the licensing process, and enhance safety and compliance on Lagos roads. The system will support the state's broader transportation reform agenda, particularly in digital enforcement, vehicle monitoring, and regulatory compliance.

Additionally, Osiyemi said the Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service has intensified enforcement of the 'No Vehicle Inspection, No Roadworthiness Certificate' policy through technology-driven operations. He disclosed that 1,114,080 roadworthiness certificates were issued during the review period, reflecting increased compliance with vehicle safety regulations across the state.
