Role of the Church in a Decaying World (2)

By Stephen Wolemonwu, Guardian Nigeria, 20 June 2026

Sacred Causes of Decay

Rejection of God's Word: Hosea 4:6 declares, "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge." Ignorance of God's word leads to moral blindness. When Scripture is sidelined, society loses its compass.

Conformity to Secular Culture: Romans 12:2 urges believers: "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind." Yet many Christians assimilate worldly values instead of resisting them, diluting the distinctiveness of the gospel.

Pride and Selfishness: Proverbs 16:18 warns: "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall." Pride breeds entitlement, selfish ambition, and disregard for God's authority — all precursors to decay.

The Church As Light In Darkness

  • Moral Leadership: The Church must speak truth to those in authority, rebuking corruption, injustice, and moral decadence. Silence in the face of evil is complicity.
  • Institutional Advocacy: Through communiqués of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) and initiatives like Caritas Nigeria, the Church advocates for justice, peace, and social welfare.
  • Watchdog Function: The Church serves as the conscience of the nation, reminding leaders and citizens alike of higher moral standards; we must not become the "wagging tail dog, but the watchdog."
  • Partnerships: Collaboration with institutions like the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) and civil society groups strengthens the fight against corruption and injustice.
  • Alternative Values: By promoting honesty, contentment, and hard work, the Church offers a counter-narrative to materialism and greed.

When Salt Loses Its Savour

Christ's warning in Matthew 5:13 is sobering: "If salt loses its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored?" The Church risks irrelevance when it mirrors the very decay it is meant to resist.

  • Materialism And Prosperity Gospel: Galatians 1:6-9 warns against preaching "another gospel." When wealth becomes the central message, the cross is emptied of its power.
  • Leadership Tussles: Internal strife and power struggles weaken the Church's witness. Division within the Body of Christ undermines its credibility.
  • Quest for Wealth and Fame: When leaders chase celebrity status, spiritual authority is diluted. The shepherd becomes indistinguishable from the world's entertainers.
  • Tribalism and Nepotism: Favoritism fractures unity. The Church ceases to be a universal family when ethnic or tribal loyalties take precedence over the gospel.
  • Lack of Accountability: Without transparency, mistrust festers. Scandals erode confidence in spiritual leadership.
  • Entitlement Mentality: The Church must adhere to Christ-modeled servant leadership. When leaders demand privilege instead of serving, they betray the very essence of discipleship.

A Call To Renewal

Decay is real — both secular and sacred. Yet the Church is called to be salt and light. To recover its savour, the Church must:

  • Return to the authority of God's word.
  • Resist conformity to secular culture.
  • Model servant leadership rooted in humility.
  • Speak prophetically against injustice.
  • Live out alternative values that inspire hope.

The challenge is clear: The Church must either shine in the darkness or risk being swallowed by it.

Conclusion: Ecclesial Responsibility In A Decaying World

The Church must reclaim her vocation as salt and light. This requires:

  • Prophetic Boldness: Speaking truth to authorities without compromise.
  • Holiness of Witness: Returning to the gospel of sanctification and pure living.
  • Ecumenical Unity: Catholics, Anglicans, Methodists, and other denominations must break down unnecessary church walls and collaborate against corruption.
  • Historical Consciousness: Learning from epochs where the Church preserved civilisation amid collapse is indispensable.

Ultimately, the Church's relevance lies not in popularity, but in fidelity to Christ's mandate: "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven," (Matthew 5:16). When the world decays, the Church must not dissolve into it; when the night deepens, the Church must not dim, but blaze forth with Christ's light.
