President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the management of the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) to immediately reinforce the security personnel of the institute. Speaking through Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima during a visit to the institute, Tinubu emphasized that the participants are the future of the country. He ordered the institute to provide more powerful security forces and work out a security modality to reach his office within the next 72 hours.
Vice President's Visit
The Vice President visited the institute on Tuesday to commiserate over a recent terrorist attack that claimed the lives of two military men and a police officer. Upon arrival from Jos Airport, Shettima went straight to the scene of the attack, where security operatives briefed him on the events that occurred in the early hours of Tuesday. After the briefing, he proceeded to the hall to deliver his remarks.
Security Measures Announced
President Tinubu also directed the institute to construct perimeter fencing around all its blocks, promising to provide perimeter lights. Shettima commended the courage of the security personnel for repelling the bandits, stating that their bravery is appreciated. He announced that solar lights would be installed across the institute to further enhance security.
Recognition and Support
Shettima, who serves as the permanent visitor of NIPSS, commended President Tinubu, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, the 3 Division of the Nigerian Army, and Commissioner of Police Bassey Ewah for preventing further attacks. He described NIPSS as a national asset and emphasized the need for more security forces.
Governor's Response
Governor Mutfwang described the attack as unfortunate but thanked God that the bandits' intentions were not fully realized. He expressed gratitude to the gallant security officers who defended the institute and stated that the government will not retreat.
Director-General's Remarks
In his welcome address, the Director-General of NIPSS, Professor Ayo Omotayo, said that the Vice President's visit reflected their concern. He noted that the courage of the security personnel prevented what could have been a bloodier incident. Omotayo stressed that the attack exposed the vulnerability of NIPSS as a strategic institution, emphasizing that an attack on NIPSS is an attack on the nation. Despite the incident, he affirmed that NIPSS has never failed to fulfill its mandate and programmes. "We are not discouraged. We remain undaunted. We remain confident to face challenges," he said.
