Fresh Trouble for Tinubu as School Certificate Demands Resurface

A civil society organisation, the Center for Reform and Public Advocacy (CFRPA), has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to clarify issues surrounding the academic credentials submitted by President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election. The demand comes ahead of the 2027 election, reigniting debates over the President's educational qualifications.

CFRPA Seeks Legal Clarification from INEC

In a letter dated June 19, 2026, addressed to INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan, the CFRPA requested a legal interpretation of concerns raised over President Tinubu's educational records. The letter, signed by the Head of Legal Unit, Barrister Kalu Agu, emphasised the need for transparency to strengthen public confidence in Nigeria's electoral process.

The organisation referenced documents released by Chicago State University and other records that raised questions requiring INEC's interpretation. It also cited constitutional provisions on qualifications for elective positions, urging the commission to make its position public.

Threat of Judicial Action

CFRPA warned that it may seek judicial interpretation of relevant constitutional provisions if INEC fails to respond. The group argued that clarification would address eligibility concerns for future elections and prevent disputes.

According to Barrister Kalu Agu, 'The purpose of this request is to obtain clarification on the legal implications of concerns raised over the President's educational records and their relevance ahead of the 2027 presidential election.'

Background of the Controversy

The issue of President Tinubu's academic credentials has been a recurring topic since the 2023 election. Critics have questioned the authenticity of documents from Chicago State University, leading to legal battles and public debate. The CFRPA's latest move adds pressure on INEC to provide clarity before the next electoral cycle.
