Senior Advocate Demands Investigation Into Deadly Nasarawa Community Attack
Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Terkaa Aondo, has issued a strong call for an immediate and thorough investigation into a violent incident that occurred in Anuku community, located within Kanje District of Awe Local Government Area in Nasarawa State. The legal luminary condemned what he described as a deadly assault on residents, which reportedly resulted in fatalities, injuries, and the displacement of numerous families from their homes.
Details of the Violent Incident
According to preliminary accounts gathered from local sources, one individual identified as Moses Utim lost his life during the attack. Several other residents sustained various injuries, while many families were forced to flee their homes in panic. The incident, which took place on April 18, 2026, involved armed individuals who reportedly attacked unarmed community members, destroyed property, and created widespread fear throughout Anuku.
"I condemn in the strongest terms the violent attack on the unarmed people of Anuku community," stated Aondo, emphasizing that the event led to "loss of lives, injuries and displacement of residents."
Alleged Connection to Mining Activities
The Senior Advocate linked the unrest to reported mining operations in the area, specifically implicating a company named IVAGOM Integrated Solutions Ltd. Aondo alleged that the firm commenced activities on farmlands belonging to community members without obtaining their consent, providing adequate compensation, or showing regard for their livelihoods.
"Available information indicates that mining operations commenced on farmlands belonging to members of the community without their consent, adequate compensation, or regard for their means of livelihood," he declared.
Security Concerns and Blocked Access
Aondo raised serious concerns about the reported presence of security personnel during the incident, noting that their alleged failure to intervene effectively requires comprehensive investigation. "The reported presence of security personnel without effective intervention raises serious concerns about the protection of lives and property," he stated.
Furthermore, the SAN alleged that access routes leading out of the community were blocked following the attack, exacerbating the situation for affected residents and hindering their ability to seek safety or assistance.
Constitutional and Human Rights Implications
While acknowledging that the allegations require independent verification, Aondo emphasized that the reported events raise significant constitutional and human rights concerns. These include violations of the rights to life, human dignity, freedom of movement, and property.
"The use of state security apparatus in any situation that results in harm to civilians is unacceptable. The sanctity of life must be preserved," he asserted.
Calls for Action and Humanitarian Support
Aondo made several urgent appeals to various authorities:
- He called on security agencies to restore law and order in the area, ensure the safe return of displaced persons, and conduct a thorough, impartial investigation into the incident.
- He urged mining sector authorities to examine the operations of IVAGOM Integrated Solutions Ltd to determine compliance with existing laws and regulations.
- He appealed to the Nasarawa State Government and local authorities to protect affected communities and provide immediate humanitarian support, including assistance for displaced families.
"There is an urgent need for humanitarian intervention, including support for displaced families and those affected by the incident," he added.
At the time of reporting, authorities in Nasarawa State had not yet responded to these serious allegations. The situation remains tense as calls for justice and accountability grow louder.
