Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, has called on Nigerian judicial officers to exercise caution and impartiality when handling politically sensitive cases, particularly amid the ongoing leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He warned that court decisions perceived as politically motivated could erode public confidence in the judiciary and undermine the country's democratic processes.
ADC Leadership Dispute Intensifies
Frank's warning comes as legal battles continue between the ADC and its former deputy national chairman, Nafiu Bala Gombe. He alleged that certain individuals are attempting to manipulate court proceedings to weaken opposition parties ahead of future elections. Frank also claimed that political pressure is being exerted on judges to influence rulings in the case, but he expressed confidence that Nigerians committed to democratic stability would resist such efforts.
Call for Judicial Fairness
Addressing the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, and all judges across the country, Frank emphasized the need for strict adherence to constitutional principles and impartiality. “The Chief Judge and all judges of the Federal High Court, as well as judges across the country, should be cautious in the way they handle political and other sensitive cases at this time,” he stated. “They should be careful because the international community is watching and paying attention.”
Frank further asserted that Nigeria's judiciary is under increased international scrutiny. He warned that rulings perceived as anti-democratic could lead to repercussions from foreign governments and institutions. “From now on, there will be consequences from the international community for judges who give judgments aimed at truncating democracy,” he said.
He urged courts at all levels, including the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court, to safeguard democratic integrity and avoid being used as tools to exclude legitimate political actors. The ADC leadership dispute remains a focal point in Nigeria's political landscape, with observers closely monitoring judicial responses.
