Woman Seeks Divorce After 3 Months, Returns Half Dowry

A woman named Fatima Usman has approached the Magajin Gari Shari’a Court in Kaduna State seeking a divorce from her husband, Sulaiman Adamu, after just three months of marriage. The case was heard on Tuesday, May 5.

Details of the Divorce Request

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Fatima requested the dissolution of their marriage through Khul’i, a form of divorce in Islamic law where a woman returns her dowry to gain her freedom. She stated, “The dowry is N100,000 but I am willing to pay half of the dowry which is N50,000.”

Judge's Ruling

The presiding judge, Malam Yakubu Abdullahi, asked the defendant if he agreed to the terms. Sulaiman Adamu replied, “Yes, it’s okay by me.” The judge then explained that under Islamic principles, when a woman seeks a divorce, she is permitted to return the dowry, which may be higher or lower than the original amount paid. The court subsequently dissolved the marriage and ordered Fatima to pay back the dowry immediately.
