The Kano State Government has announced a major technological overhaul designed to transform payroll management and eliminate financial leakages across its 44 local government areas.
Capacity Building for a Digital Transition
This groundbreaking initiative was officially disclosed by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Mohammed Tajo Othman. The revelation came at the conclusion of a comprehensive 4-day Capacity Building Training Session held in November 2025.
The training was specifically organized to equip key personnel from the State Primary Health Care Management Board (SPHCMB), the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), and the Ministry for Local Government with the necessary skills to operate the new Human Resource and Payroll software effectively.
Key Features and Expected Impact
The innovative Staff and Payroll Software integrates biometric data to create a foolproof system for managing civil servants. Its primary objectives are multi-faceted and ambitious.
The system is engineered to completely eradicate ghost workers from the government's payroll, a persistent issue that has plagued public finance for years. Furthermore, it guarantees timely salary payments to genuine employees and enhances overall accountability within the local government structure.
Beyond immediate payroll sanitization, the software includes an automated notification feature that will alert civil servants about their impending retirement three months in advance. This is designed to ensure a seamless and planned transition out of active service.
Post-Retirement Support and Future Outlook
In a complementary move to support retirees, the Ministry plans to engage them in entrepreneurship skill training programs. This initiative aims to equip former civil servants with the skills needed to become self-reliant and thrive in their post-service lives.
Commissioner Othman urged all participants to take the training seriously and familiarize themselves thoroughly with the new system. He emphasized that computer literacy is fundamental to the successful implementation and sustainability of this project.
This move by the Governor Yusuf-led administration underscores a firm commitment to leveraging technology for promoting good governance, ensuring fiscal responsibility, and ultimately improving the quality of service delivery to the citizens of Kano State.
