Peter Azi, 57, former Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, has died. A family member, John Azi, announced the ex-speaker’s death in Jos, the Plateau State capital, on Thursday. He said Azi died on Wednesday, 12 August, but did not disclose the cause of death.
Family Confirms Passing of Former Speaker
“With total submission to the will of God Almighty, the Azi Ajang family announces the passing unto glory of their son, brother, and father, Mr Peter Azi, the former Speaker of Plateau House of Assembly,” Azi said. “He has peacefully joined his creator.”
Azi’s Tenure as Speaker
Azi served as Speaker from June 2015 to July 2018 during the administration of former Governor Simon Lalong. He was a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and remained active in the state’s political affairs after leaving office. He had led the House during a period of significant political activity in Plateau State.
Political Career and Legacy
The late ex-lawmaker rose through Plateau’s political structure to lead the legislature, the pinnacle of his career. His death has thrown political associates, lawmakers, and members of his community into mourning.
