The Kwara State House of Assembly has taken decisive disciplinary action against one of its members, suspending him for a period of three months. The suspension follows allegations of serious misconduct related to the unauthorised recording of a legislative meeting.
Motion for Suspension and Debate
On Wednesday, 18 December 2025, the legislative body moved to suspend Hon. Saba Yisa Gideon, who represents the Edu State Constituency. The motion for his immediate suspension was moved by the Leader of the House, Hon. Abdulkadir Magaji. He cited Order 4, Rule 14 of the House's internal privileges rules and Section 14(2) of the Legislative Houses (Powers and Privileges) Act 2017 as the legal basis for the action.
During the debates on the matter, the embattled lawmaker admitted to committing the offence. The motion was debated by several other members, including:
- Hon. Ganiyu Folabi Salaudeen (Omupo State Constituency)
- Hon. Musa Kareem (Patigi Constituency)
- Hon. Owolabi Rasaq (Shaare Oke Ode Constituency)
- Hon. Abdullahi Halidu Danbaba (Kaiama/Kemanji/Wajibe Constituency)
- Hon. Oniboki Yunusa (Afon Constituency)
The Allegations and Official Resolution
The House resolved that Hon. Gideon's actions amounted to contempt and a breach of privilege. The core allegation was that he recorded a meeting process and shared the audio recording "with an unauthorised person". In its resolution, the Assembly stated that such an act "is capable of bringing the legislative institution to disrepute."
Consequences and Next Steps
The three-month suspension took effect immediately. As part of the disciplinary measures, Gideon has been ordered to write a formal apology to the House within the suspension period. Attempts to reach the suspended lawmaker for his comments were unsuccessful, as calls to his known mobile contacts did not connect.
This incident highlights the strict protocols governing legislative proceedings in Nigeria and the consequences for members who violate the trust and rules of the parliamentary institution.
